Small Change organises and sponsors an annual student design competition 'small home BIG LIFE' to inspire the next generation of designers and builders to build smaller and more sustainable homes.
This customised studio behind an existing house was designed for hobbies, teenage retreat and a small work shop, all in a garden setting.
Sometimes our clients don’t need a fully self-contained small home, just a studio with a bathroom may meet their requirements. This studio at the rear of a home in Brunswick needed to fulfil a couple of extra roles too – a small workshop plus an occasional study/retreat to escape the hectic family home.
We used corrugated colourbond steel externally and a steeply pitched roof that accommodates a loft space for storage. The whole space is heated with a small pot belly stove and the north facing window seat adds to the sense of a cosy retreat overlooking a fabulously abundant vegetable garden. The owners tell us they spend more time in the studio now than in the main house!
